Members of Laboratory for the Ethics of Digital Technologies in Healthcare (Digit-HeaL) Anto Čartolovni and Luka Poslon participated at the online conference “Frontiers of Artificial Intelligence – Philosophical explorations”, which took place from 1st to 2nd December, 2023 online via the Zoom platform. The conference was organized by the Commission for the Philosophy of Science of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAS).

International experts addressed the issues of creativity, value alignment, epistemic states in AI systems, and the development of general artificial intelligence (AGI) in an effort to deal with the philosophical and ethical questions raised by the process of creation and development of artificial intelligence (AI).

Our PhD fellow Luka Poslon delivered a speech in co-authorship with Anto Čartolovni  “Outpacing the Trustworthiness in LLM Use in Medicine by Addressing Opacity and Enhancing Explainability”. In his talk, he covered the challenges of using large language models (LLMs) in the medicine, the “black box” problem, the opacity of the AI models, and how Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting may improve the transparency of AI models.

The conference emphasized the limitations of AI, arguing that AI cannot fully explain its capabilities, how AI exactly works, or why is AI limited to specific problem-solving tasks. Given that the advancement of AI requires knowing the philosophical foundations of the problem we are attempting to solve, the topic of this conference is critical for a responsible approach to the future development of AI.
