MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE PROJECT

The project focuses on developing an innovative hip endoprosthesis material with improved biofunctionality, antibacterial properties, and the ability to prevent biofilm formation on the implant surface. It addresses the problem of infection occurrence, consequent rejection of the implant, re-operative procedures, and economic costs. Innovative titanium-based alloys will be prepared with advanced technologies, which provide the potential to obtain a more economically advantageous implant with improved corrosion and mechanical properties and enhanced antibacterial properties. The properties of the alloy processed by conventional casting and 3D printing (DMLM method) will be compared.  The optimal alloy composition will be designed, and the material will be characterized in terms of its structural, mechanical, and biological properties, focusing on corrosion resistance and biofunctionality. The final phase will involve testing the integration of the acetabular cup and stem prototype with other components of the total hip prosthesis, in collaboration with Instrumentaria.
