Head of the University Department of History Ines Sabotič appears on Croatian Radio programme “Susret u dijalogu”

The Head of the University Department of History at the Catholic University of Croatia, Professor Ines Sabotič, PhD, appeared on the Croatian Radio programme Susret u dijalogu on Sunday, September 28, 2026, in an episode dedicated to Pope Leo XIV’s apostolic visit to France and the position and prospects of Christianity in French society and Europe.

Sabotič, who was born and educated in France, reflected on contemporary French society, where, despite strong secularisation and the strict separation of religion and the state, recent years have seen an increase in the number of adults seeking baptism. She noted that young people, as well as other French citizens, are increasingly searching for a deeper sense of meaning that they do not find in various secular movements and activities.

Speaking about the position of believers in one of Europe’s most secular countries, the Head of the Department emphasised that they are a minority in France and that the environment is not always favourable towards them. According to Sabotič, these circumstances further encourage them to persevere in their faith, while those who identify as believers demonstrate authenticity and a desire to express Christianity in their everyday lives.

Although France is often associated with secularism, pluralism, modernism and laïcité, she pointed out that the country is more deeply connected to its Christian heritage than is sometimes assumed. She also reflected on the values of liberty, equality and fraternity, highlighting their deep connection with the Christian tradition. In her view, the considerable interest in Pope Leo XIV’s visit to France and the atmosphere surrounding it also demonstrate that Christian tradition and faith remain present in French society.

Also participating in the programme was Fr Tvrtko Barun, Director of the Ignatian Centre for Spirituality and Culture. The discussion addressed the messages of Pope Leo XIV’s apostolic visit, the need for unity and hope in Europe, the protection of human dignity, and care for vulnerable and marginalised people.
