Catholic University of Croatia brings together experts from 11 countries for Erasmus+ Summer School on higher education and the environmental crisis

From July 13 to 17, 2026, the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) “Higher Education Addressing the Erasmus+ Priority: Environment and the Fight Against Climate Change” was held at the Catholic University of Croatia, organized by the University Laudato si’ Centre. The programme brought together 32 lecturers, researchers, and higher education professionals from 11 European countries.

The Summer School focused on the role of higher education in the green transition and the fight against climate change. Particular attention was given to how religions can contribute to understanding the environmental crisis as a phenomenon that links care for the environment with human dignity. Through group work and guest lectures, participants explored ways in which sustainability can become an integral part of teaching, the work of higher education institutions, and Erasmus+ projects. Among the main conclusions was that the green transition is not only a technological issue, but also an educational, cultural, and institutional one, and that sustainability should be integrated into different study programmes and academic disciplines.

Particular emphasis was placed on actively engaging students, linking teaching with practical experience, and aligning the day-to-day operation of universities with sustainability principles. Participants recommended adopting a whole-institution approach encompassing teaching, research, campus management, staff development, and student engagement.

The programme held at the Catholic University of Croatia also resulted in concrete recommendations for higher education institutions and future Erasmus+ projects, ranging from more sustainable forms of travel and the use of digital tools to the development of green action plans and stronger integration of environmental objectives into international projects.
