Assoc. Prof. Marija Sertić Presented at EFTRE 2025 Conference in Budapest

Assoc. Prof. Marija Sertić, from the Department of Theology at the Catholic University of Croatia, gave a lecture and workshop at the international EFTRE 2025 (European Forum of Teachers of Religious Education) conference, held in Budapest from 21 to 24 August 2025. Her presentation and workshop were titled “Empowering Human Dignity through the Cultivation of Virtuous Living.”

The lecture explored how a virtuous person promotes and protects human dignity, highlighting three key features:

  1. Acceptance of others in a spirit of inclusion and safety,
  2. Cultivating gratitude and a positive attitude,
  3. Acting justly and responsibly towards others.

A virtuous person recognizes that respect for human dignity is the foundation of successful and meaningful human relationships. Quality relationships require recognizing and valuing the intrinsic worth of others; without this, building genuine connections is impossible. Relationships that acknowledge and nurture the value of others bring joy, foster a sense of security, and strengthen mutual respect and solidarity. Thus, respect for human dignity is not only a fundamental moral principle but also a practical necessity for personal and moral growth, as well as for building harmonious communities. Following the presentation, the workshop invited discussion on how a virtuous way of life safeguards the dignity of every individual, especially within the academic community.

In addition to her presentation and workshop, Assoc. Prof. Sertić accepted the invitation to become a member of the European Forum of Teachers of Religious Education and assumed the role of national representative for Croatia.
