Faculty of Engineering Becomes a Partner in the “BrainClock” Project
The Faculty of Engineering of the Catholic University of Croatia has officially become a partner in the Targeted Scientific Research (CZI) project titled “Development of Personalised Tests for Determining Brain Biological Age and Early Detection of Dementia (BrainClock)”.
When experts from Genos obtain large amounts of new data using brain organoids developed at the School of Medicine, all data will be analysed using advanced methods based on artificial intelligence algorithms, an area of expertise of the Faculty of Engineering. To identify new biomarkers of brain ageing and dementia, the project will employ convolutional neural networks of advanced architectures and specialised protocols developed specifically for BrainClock. To improve and optimise algorithms based on convolutional neural networks, hyperparameter tuning will be examined using evolutionary computing algorithms. The project will also explore metrics that can be used to evaluate the performance of algorithms designed for detecting new biomarkers of brain ageing and dementia.
The research group at the Faculty of Engineering successfully conducts AI-based research in the fields of medicine and expert systems. They collaborate with specialists from various Clinical Hospital Centres, achieving significant results in data preprocessing, designing conceptual solutions, and developing AI algorithms for recognising and detecting medical conditions.
