Guest Lecture on Developing Effective Professional Communication in English Held for Nursing Students
On Monday, 25 May 2026, a guest lecture titled “English for Nursing Practice: Developing Effective Professional Communication in Intensive Care Settings” was held at the Catholic University of Croatia. The event for nursing students was organized and moderated by Antonija Hreščan, Senior Lecturer.
Alena Lochmannová, Ph.D. & Ph.D., a researcher at the Faculty of Medicine from Charles University in the Czech Republic, delivered the lecture. The central topic of the lecture was the development of English-language communication skills and their application in the professional nursing environment.
Alena Lochmannová focused the lecture on developing professional communication in English within intensive care units, with particular emphasis on patient safety, collaboration within healthcare teams, and empathetic communication with patients and their families.
Participants were introduced to the fundamental principles of effective communication in demanding clinical situations, examples of professional nursing terminology and expressions, and techniques for structured information transfer, including the SBAR communication model. Special attention was given to communication with patients in intensive care units, their family members, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
The lecture also highlighted the importance of professional communication in English as a key competence in the contemporary healthcare environment, particularly for international cooperation, professional mobility, and access to medical research and professional guidelines.
