The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (Candlemas) and the Memorial of St. Blaise
On February 2, we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, also known as Candlemas.
This feast of Jesus’ presentation in the Temple invites us to reflect on our own “presentation” at baptism. The Paschal candle, which is lit for the first time at the Easter Vigil and represents the most prominent “Light of Christ” in the liturgy, was lit at our baptism. From its flame, the smaller baptismal candle was lit. The Church has long recognized this connection. As early as the seventh century, on February 2, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, candles have been blessed. From this practice comes the name “Candlemas.”
The University Chaplain, Branimir Jagodić, therefore invites everyone to join the Holy Mass, which will be celebrated at 12:00 noon in our university chapel. During the Mass, candles will also be blessed, and you will be able to take them home with you.
On Tuesday, February 3, we celebrate the memorial of St. Blaise, the helper in illnesses of the throat. At the Holy Mass at 12:00 noon, the traditional blessing of the throat (the so-called blessing of St. Blaise) will also take place.
