The PhD programs in History and Sociology: Values, Identity, and Social Changes in Croatian Society at the Catholic University of Croatia are conducted based on licenses issued by the Ministry of Science and Education.
To enroll in the doctoral programs at the Catholic University of Croatia, general and specific requirements must be met. More details can be found in the Calls for Applications:

Admission Requirements for the Doctoral Program in History:
A completed graduate university program in History or a related graduate university program, with specified additional conditions (differential courses), or a completed Master of Science in History.
A minimum weighted GPA of 4.0 from the graduate university program. If the applicant has a GPA below this threshold, they are required to submit two recommendations from university professors or respected scholars familiar with the applicant’s academic achievements.
An admissions interview (covering motivation for enrolling in the program, knowledge of foreign languages, and information literacy) – the schedule will be posted [HERE].
Along with evidence of meeting the specified requirements, the applicant is required to submit:A letter of intent clearly stating their desire and reasons for researching a specific field, an outline of the proposed dissertation topic, and motivation for enrolling in the Doctoral Program in History;
A curriculum vitae (CV);
A letter of confirmation from a mentor on the List of Mentors, including a statement of consent and reasoning for accepting the mentorship.
During the admission process, an admission interview is conducted with the applicant, focusing on their motivation, knowledge of foreign languages relevant to the program, and information literacy.
Enrollment quota for the 2024/2025 academic year: Each mentor from the List of Mentors may supervise a maximum of two students.
- Sociology
Admission Requirements for the Doctoral Program in Sociology: Values, Identity, and Social Change in Croatian Society:
- A completed university graduate program in sociology (Master of Sociology) or a completed sociology program (graduate in sociology, professor of sociology), or a completed university or postgraduate scientific master’s program prior to the introduction of the Bologna system in 2005 in other scientific fields, with additional requirements (differential subjects/module).
- Candidates who have not completed a graduate university program in sociology (Master of Sociology, graduate in sociology, professor of sociology) may be eligible for admission with mandatory additional requirements. Candidates must submit certified copies of the study program or curriculum of the program completed by September 13, 2024, to determine additional requirements. If an evaluation of the documents reveals a difference between programs:
- Less than 30 ECTS credits: Candidates, if admitted, must complete the specified differential subjects during their studies.
- More than 30 ECTS credits: Candidates will be directed to enroll in the Differential Module Program.
- A grade point average of at least 3.5 in undergraduate/bachelor’s and graduate studies or throughout the studies. If the candidate’s GPA is below 3.5, they must provide two recommendations from university professors or renowned researchers familiar with the candidate’s academic achievements, or have published at least one scientific or professional paper in a relevant publication. Proof of scientific and professional activity (presentations at conferences, participation in scientific and professional projects, etc.) should also be submitted to demonstrate motivation for doctoral studies in sociology and professional competence.
- Admission interview (motivation for study, knowledge of relevant foreign languages, and information literacy).
In addition to proof of meeting the above requirements, the candidate must submit a letter of intent clearly stating their motivation and reasons for enrolling in the doctoral program in Sociology: Values, Identity, and Social Change in Croatian Society, as well as their interest in researching a specific field.

Application for Enrollment
Applications for the admission process are accepted from June 3 to July 19, 2024, and from August 19 to September 13, 2024, in one of the following ways:
via e-mail to doktorskistudiji.prijave@unicath.hr in PDF or JPG format;
via the Student Services Office of the University (weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or by appointment).
The application form can be downloaded HERE or obtained from the Student Services Office.
The application includes the Application Form along with the required documentation:
- a certificate of completed graduate university studies in History or a related graduate university study program or a completed Master’s degree in History;
- a certificate of the weighted grade point average of the graduate university study program of at least 4.0, or two recommendations from university professors or distinguished scientists familiar with the applicant’s academic achievements (if the applicant’s GPA is lower than 4.0);
- a statement of purpose with a preliminary dissertation topic proposal, including explanation and motivation for enrolling in the doctoral study program in history;
- a curriculum vitae;
- a confirmation letter from a mentor listed on the Mentor List, in which the mentor gives consent to supervise the applicant, with an explanation;
- proof of payment of the admission procedure fee (EUR 90.00; payment to the IBAN of the Catholic University of Croatia: HR1123400091110353987; in the reference number, enter the applicant’s OIB; payment description: „Razredbeni postupak: Povijest – doktorski studij“
- a decision on the recognition of a foreign higher education qualification or a request for an initiated procedure (for applicants who completed their studies outside the Republic of Croatia).
Applicant who completed studies outside the Republic of Croatia
An applicant who does not have proof of recognition of a foreign higher education qualification may initiate the academic recognition procedure via the Student Services Office or by email at doktorskistudiji.prijave@unicath.hr no later than September 13, 2024.
Along with the Request for Academic Recognition of a Foreign Higher Education Qualification (the form can be downloaded here or obtained from the Student Services Office), the following must be submitted no later than September 13, 2024:
- the original document proving the foreign educational qualification,
- a certified translation of the document proving the foreign educational qualification,
- a certified study program (if available),
- proof of citizenship, except in the case of stateless persons or individuals without citizenship,
- proof of payment of the academic recognition procedure fee (EUR 60.00; payment to the IBAN of the Catholic University of Croatia: HR1123400091110353987; in the reference number, enter the applicant’s OIB; payment description: „Priznavanje IVK – Ime i prezime – doktorski studij“
Documents in a foreign language must be translated and certified by a court-sworn translator.
An applicant who does not submit the Decision on academic recognition of a foreign higher education qualification at the time of enrollment, but only a Request for the initiated recognition procedure, will be allowed to enroll conditionally, and the enrollment will remain conditional until the Decision is submitted to the Student Services Office. Additional documentation may be requested from the applicant.
Transfer to the Doctoral Study in History
An applicant who has started a doctoral study in History at another university in the Republic of Croatia or abroad may continue studies through transfer. The request for transfer must be submitted via the Student Services Office of the University no later than September 13, 2024.
An applicant who has started a doctoral study in History at another university in the Republic of Croatia must submit the following required documentation:
- a copy of the student record (index or student ID card),
- a certified copy of the study program and the course syllabus valid at the time of enrollment,
- a certified transcript of completed activities and passed exams, including grades and obtained ECTS credits,
- proof of payment of the transfer request fee (EUR 36.00).
Additional documentation may be requested from the applicant.
An applicant who has started a doctoral study in History at another university abroad may request recognition of the study period or the obtained ECTS credits using the prescribed form.
The request must include:
– the index or other document proving the completed period of study, in the original or certified copy,
– a certified translation of the document proving the completed period of study,
– a document proving passed exams, in the original or certified copy (transcript of passed exams with grades and obtained ECTS credits),
– a certified translation of the document proving passed exams,
– the valid study program and course syllabus at the time of enrollment,
– proof of citizenship, except in the case of stateless persons or individuals without citizenship,
– a decision from the competent authority for persons who have changed their name and/or surname,
– proof of payment of the recognition fee for the study period or ECTS credits (EUR 30.00).
Additional documentation may be requested from the applicant.

The total tuition fee for the doctoral study program in History, in accordance with the Study Program and the Decision of the University Senate on the amount of tuition fees, amounts to EUR 6,000.00 for three (3) years of study.
The tuition fee per semester/year/entire study program is to be paid to the IBAN of the Catholic University of Croatia: HR1123400091110353987. The student’s OIB must be entered as the reference number, and the payment description should be: „Povijest – doktorski studij“ or the payment can be made at the University cashier’s office (weekdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or by appointment).

The total tuition fee for the doctoral study program in Sociology: Values, Identity, and Social Changes in Croatian Society, in accordance with the Study Program and the Decision of the University Senate on the amount of tuition fees, amounts to EUR 6,600.00 for three (3) years of study.
The tuition fee per semester/year/entire study program is to be paid to the IBAN of the Catholic University of Croatia: HR1123400091110353987.
