History students participated in three workshops of the project "From defensive rampart to military reservoir"

As part of the project From defensive rampart to "military reservoir": the evolution of the border guard as a soldier from the 16th to the 18th century (preliminary research) funded by the Catholic University of Croatia, and led by Dr. Filip Hren from the University Department of History, a series of workshops entitled British newspapers as a historical source were held on the university premises, led by Dr. Juraj Balić and Dr. Filip Hren.

During three meetings (April 1 and 15, and May 6, 2025), undergraduate and graduate history students, doctoral students, and HKS alumni analyzed British newspaper sources from the first half of the 18th century, with a special emphasis on the War of the Austrian Succession (1740–1748). They explored the ways in which British newspapers reported on Croatian border guards, Trenck's panduri, and military operations such as the siege of Prague and the Bavarian town of Cham in 1742. Special emphasis was placed on understanding specific military terms (e.g. Pandours, Karlstädter, Licanians, Hussars) and the differences in reporting on the same event in different newspapers.

The participants demonstrated an enviable level of historical understanding and analytical skills, and the great interest in this topic was confirmed by the planned continuation of the workshops in the winter semester 2025/2026, including the planned fieldwork led by the third associate on the project, Prof. Dr. Hrvoje Kekez.
