Why study sociology at HKS?

Today’s youth is invited to build the future of the society in which they live. If we desire quality change, we need to understand what this society is and what processes are at work within it. Sociology will provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills so that you too can be part of that change!

From the very beginning, I have been very enthusiastic about the whole thing about CUC. I considered it a good thing to come to a place where everything is just starting with nothing but the foundations in place. It is precisely us, the students who, together with our professors, assistants and all other associates are building this University. It really is something and I’m proud of it. The professors are helpful, assistants friendly, and the Student Service staff always smiling – which is quite rare! :). I am glad that we have a small number of students, they are all nice and always willing to help. And that is what makes this a great place for studying, socializing and making new friends.

Roko Mišetić, PhD, Assistant Professor, Deputy of the Head of the Department of Sociology

Among all the social sciences, sociology has a special place because it attempts to understand society as a whole, while taking into account all of its components. In doing that, it has developed specific sociological theories as well as the sociological methodology. However, sociology is not closed within its own limits. It also applies knowledge of other social sciences and humanities. This characteristic is particularly fostered at the Catholic University of Croatia where the study of sociology is designed in a way that students are trained from the beginning of their studies to be open and used to interdisciplinary collaborations. In addition to that, the advantage of studying at the Catholic University of Croatia also lies in the fact that many professors are experienced scientists who apart from their teaching, have a rich research experience. This is particularly important for the education of sociologists who are always required to connect theoretical and empirical knowledge.

Mario Bara, PhD, Assistant Professor

It is almost impossible to imagine the modern society of today without sociology. Due to new technologies, the society has accelerated, constantly changing through the ever faster interactions and ever complex social networks. Such rapid changes in society ask for adequate answers. With its subject of research and methodological approaches, sociology is competent to provide such answers. That is, there is no segment of society that sociology and sociological research cannot have practical implications on. That is why sociology is in constant dialogue with other affiliated disciplines. A vast variety of compulsory and elective sociological courses at the Catholic University of Croatia follow these trends within its study programs. The program allows students to understand and analyse social phenomena and to apply the acquired knowledge in practice. In addition to research related knowledge, this study program also trains students in the teaching skills necessary to successfully participate in educational processes.
