Department of Sociology – A word of the Head of the Department
Professor Gordan Črpić,
Head of the Department of Sociology
In a world that is falling into ever deeper and longer-lasting crises, it makes sense to ask ourselves: why study?
Especially, why study in Croatia, a country burdened with heavy anti-intellectual, and anti-professional heritage?
And then of course, if we do choose to study, why study sociology at the Catholic University of Croatia?
Are there jobs for sociologists out there now? Will there be jobs for sociologists in the future?
What kind of knowledge does one acquire by studying sociology at this university?
We educate and train our students to be ready and capable to identify and create new jobs for which they can get hired or recruit others.
While establishing the study programs at the Catholic University of Croatia, we also asked ourselves those same questions.
After having considered them, we came to the conclusion that in the current circumstances in Croatia and in the world in general, we cannot expect to educate students for a ready-made existing occupations and jobs, but that the studies need to be modelled so that through them the students are educated to be ready and capable to find and create new jobs for which they will be hired or recruit others, who are less qualified for coping with the demanding modern labor market.
This is the spirit on which the study of Sociology at the Catholic University of Croatia was built.
University life encompasses the acquisition of certain skills and knowledge, values, codes of conduct and attitudes towards people and the world.
Studying at a university does not solely involve gathering certain knowledge; university life is more of an acquisition of certain skills and knowledge, values, codes of conduct and attitudes towards people and the world.
This is what makes the difference between university-educated people and those who do not possess academic education. An academic citizen does not differ from those who didn’t have the honor and privilege to study, by having a higher IQ, which often isn’t case, but by having learnt to discipline it’sthinking, focus on problems, and by knowing how to use the accumulated human knowledge, i.e. knows how to use the literature, search databases, set problems and select methods to address them.
The study requires a continuous, systematic work and interactions between the professors and the students.
The study of sociology at the Catholic University of Croatia is designed in a way that it provides knowledge and skills needed to master the understanding of complex issues of the modern world through a certain pace of work.
The core team of professors is made up of experienced researchers who possess a wealth of insight into different spheres of the Croatian society, while, on the other hand, the seminars and practical classes are co-led by assistants who have proved themselves as some of the best students in their generations. The program itself is demanding for both the professors and the students. It requires continuous, systematic work and interactions between the professors and the students.
Under-graduate study is more general and is envisaged as a preparation forenabling students to follow the graduate course which trains students to enter the unpredictable labor market equipped with knowledge and skills that will enable them not to be just passive observers, but active makers of their happiness.
